India Passport Photo — Size by Application Route

Search results for "India passport photo size" contradict each other — some say 35×45 mm, others 2×2 inches — because both were right at different times and for different routes, and most pages never say which route they mean. This page is the disambiguator: pick your route above, then use the matching preset.

For applications through GPSP 2.0 or an Indian mission, the ICAO rule applies from 1 September 2025: 35×45 mm, a 630×810 px JPEG between 10 KB and 250 KB, and a much tighter crop than before — the face fills 80–85% of the height. The tool below defaults to exactly that.

Two routes since 1 September 2025 — read before you crop

India changed its passport photo rules in 2025. Indian mission Passport Services pages state that with effect from 1 September 2025 all passport applicants must upload an ICAO-compliant photograph, and India's Ministry of External Affairs migrated to Global Passport Seva 2.0 (GPSP 2.0) from 3 September 2025. For that route the photo is 35×45 mm — digital upload 630×810 px, JPEG, face 80–85% of the height, plain white background — and the Passport Seva FAQ lists the paste-on photo at 4.5 × 3.5 cm, the same size. The tool on this page defaults to this ICAO preset.

The older 51×51 mm (2×2 in) professional-print specification from the embassy FAQ still appears in some application packets. If the official checklist you were given states a size, follow the checklist over any website, including this one — the 51×51 preset is one click away in the tool (labelled "print / legacy route").

Since 1 September 2025, passport applications through Global Passport Seva 2.0 (GPSP 2.0) and Indian missions require an ICAO-compliant photo: 35×45 mm, digital upload 630×810 px, JPEG 10–250 KB, face 80–85% of the height, plain white background. If your application checklist states a different size, follow the checklist.

⚠️ This preset only crops, resizes and compresses — it never retouches or replaces the background. Shoot against a plain white wall.

What changed in 2025 — and why the old pages disagree

Before September 2025, the widely published passport specification was the embassy FAQ's 51×51 mm professional print. From 1 September 2025, Indian missions made an ICAO-compliant photograph mandatory for passport applicants, alongside the move to Global Passport Seva 2.0 — and the Passport Seva FAQ's own size table lists 4.5 × 3.5 cm for the paste-on photo. Pages still showing only 51×51 mm are describing the legacy print route; pages showing only 35×45 mm rarely explain that a route change caused it. We flag the split openly rather than picking a side silently: the notice at the top of this page tracks what we verified and when.

Passport photo vs visa photo — do not mix them

The online visa application wants a square digital file (350–1000 px, 10–300 KB) and judges the upload, not a print. The passport ICAO route wants a rectangular 630×810 px file with the face at 80–85%. OCI still uses its own 51×51 mm composition rule (face about 80%, no border) — it was not part of the 2025 passport change. Using one route's file for another application is the most common avoidable mistake; the route cards above keep them separate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the India passport photo size?

It depends on the route. GPSP 2.0 and Indian-mission applications (from 1 September 2025): ICAO 35×45 mm, digital upload 630×810 px, JPEG 10–250 KB, face 80–85%, plain white background. Legacy print packets: 51×51 mm (2×2 in), face 70–80%, professionally printed. Follow the checklist in your application packet if it states a size.

Is the Indian passport photo 35×45 mm now?

Yes for the GPSP 2.0 / mission route: Indian mission Passport Services pages make an ICAO-compliant photograph mandatory from 1 September 2025, and the Passport Seva FAQ lists the photo at 4.5 × 3.5 cm. The 51×51 mm size survives only as the legacy print specification and for OCI.

Can I print my India passport photo at home?

For the legacy print route, no: the embassy FAQ requires a professional-grade photograph and states that prints from home or personal printers are rejected. For the GPSP 2.0 route the judged artefact is the digital upload itself — prepare the 630×810 px file here.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Cropping, resizing, compression and (where offered) background replacement all run locally in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.
