UK Passport Photo

UK passport photos run on tighter clocks and lighter backgrounds than most: the photo must be from the last month, the digital file must be at least 600×750 px and between 50 KB and 10 MB, and the background is a plain light colour — cream or light grey for paper photos.

The preset above crops to 35×45 mm at print resolution (which also satisfies the 600×750 digital minimum), checks the 50 KB file floor, and — because GOV.UK requires digital photos to be unaltered by software — keeps your original background rather than replacing it.

Everything runs in your browser — your photo is never uploaded to a server. Face the camera, use even lighting, and (for passports and visas) shoot against a plain, light wall.

Light grey — required by the official spec. Background replacement is disabled for this document (see the compliance note below).

UK passport: 35×45 mm. Digital uploads must be at least 600×750 px and 50 KB–10 MB, against a plain light-coloured background; paper photos use plain cream or light grey. Taken within the last month.

Digital upload or photo code?

Online renewals accept either a digital photo you upload or a photo code from a participating photo shop or booth, which lets the shop's photo flow into your application. A code can only be issued by an HMPO-linked provider — no website can generate one for a photo you took yourself. If you are uploading your own file, the digital column of the table above is the one that applies.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a UK passport photo?

Paper: 45 mm high × 35 mm wide. Digital: at least 600×750 px, file between 50 KB and 10 MB, plain light-coloured background, taken within the last month.

Why is my UK photo file too small?

Digital uploads have a 50 KB minimum — heavily compressed phone exports sometimes fall under it. Exporting at print resolution (1050×1350 px) as this tool does normally clears the floor comfortably.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Cropping, resizing, compression and (where offered) background replacement all run locally in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.
