Australia Passport Photo — Size Checker & Guide

Australia does not give you a size; it gives you a window. The photo must measure between 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with the face (chin to crown) between 32 and 36 mm. That is why a fixed 35×45 mm preset from a generic tool can land you outside the window on the face measurement even when the outer size looks fine.

Use the checker above with a draft photo: it frames at the range midpoint and shows the 32–36 mm face band as a guide, so you can walk into the photo studio knowing exactly what compliant looks like.

Guide & checker only — read first

The Australian Passport Office states that retouching of any kind is not accepted — explicitly including removal of the background — and recommends against using online passport photo services and mobile apps. We take that at face value: this page does not "make" an Australian passport photo. It helps you verify size, framing and the official checklist before a professional takes and prints the real photo.

Australian passport photos must measure 35–40 mm wide × 45–50 mm high — a range, not one fixed size. This checker uses the range midpoint (37.5×47.5 mm) so you can verify framing; face chin-to-crown 32–36 mm; photo less than 6 months old; two identical prints are submitted.

⚠️ The Australian Passport Office counts ANY retouching — including background removal — as alteration, and recommends against online passport photo services. This page is a specification guide and framing checker only; have the final photo taken and printed by a professional.

The range, handled properly

Tools that silently output one fixed size inside the range are not wrong about the outer dimensions — but the binding constraint is usually the face: 32–36 mm chin-to-crown is a narrow band, and it scales differently at 35 mm width than at 40 mm. Checking a draft at the midpoint, as this page does, keeps both the outer size and the face inside the window with margin on every side.
